Friday 27th September 2013

OPENING NIGHT

Venue: Festival Marquee at Galway Harbour

Start time: 7pm til late

Dress Code: Smart Casual (Friday night out)
Ticket Price: €40

  • Beginning with the opening ceremony, our newly crowned Oyster Pearl will present the season's first oyster to Galway's Mayor - a tradition since 1954.

  • Tickets holders are then invited into the festival marquee which will be kickstarted by a four piece band on stage.

  • Each Friday night ticket includes 1 token for a dish or 'taste' from the Festival Food Village

  • Additional 'tastes' may be purchased directly from the restaurants for €5-€6 per dish.

  • Each restaurant at the Festival Dining Enclosure will be serving seasonal menus of delicious signature dishes. Guests choose from a tantalising selection of seafood provided by an intimate selection of the finest Galway restaurants - Artisan Restaurant, Cava Spanish Tapas Restaurant, West at The Twelve, RAW Sushi Restaurant, WA Cafe as well as Kelly Oysters.

  • Both seafood AND non-seafood dishes will be served.

  • Midway through the evening, the National Oyster Opening Championship will take place - Irish Oyster Professionals from across Ireland are invited to compete on Friday night to win a place to represent their country at the World Oyster Olympics on Saturday.

  • Following the National Championship, the Festival Marquee will be rocked by The Papazitas 8 piece cover band. The non-stop entertainment guarantees you’ll be finding your dancing feet before the night's end.

**Please note that there are both trestle tables and high bar tables with stools dotted throughout the marquee. No seats are reserved on Friday night so seating is on a first come basis only.

WORLD OYSTER OPENING CHAMPIONSHIP

Time: 2pm-9pm

Dress Code: Smart (Jacket/Dress to Impress)

Ticket Price: €70

***FESTIVAL HIGHLIGHT***
  • Starting with the Community Parade at 1pm at Spanish Arch, the Claddagh National School, local bands, World Oyster Competitors & guests will wind through the pedestrian streets of Galway to Eyre Square then on to the Festival Marquee at Galway Harbourside.

  • Ticket holders will be welcomed to the Marquee by St Patrick's Brass Band who will lead guests inside to join the upbeat West Coast Big Band (15 piece) for a lively start to the day.

  • Saturday Tickets have 2 tokens for 'tastes' from the Food Village AND a half dozen premium native oysters AND a drink on arrival included.

  • Additional dishes may be purchased from the restaurants directly. Both seafood AND non-seafood dishes will be available.

WORLD OYSTER OPENING CHAMPIONSHIP (also known as 'Shucking')

  • The World Oyster Opening Championship features contestants from every continent competing for the world title and valuable prizes. This year there are 25 countries registered including Australia, Belgium, Canada, China, Czech Republic, Denmark, England, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Netherlands, Northern Ireland, Norway, Scotland, Singapore, Spain, South Africa, Sweden, Switzerland, USA, Wales.

  • There will be approx. 5 heats of 5 minutes each where each country has an opportunity to win the coveted title - if your country is not represented, we encourage you to adopt a favourite & cheer all the same.

  • Following the World Oyster Olympics, guests will be treated to a selection of Irish music and dance as well as a few surprise guests.

  • The Amazing Apples, award winning Irish Folk & Pop band will have you on the dance floor before handing over to More Cowbell

OYSTER MASQUERADE 'MARDI GRAS' EXTRAVAGANZA

Dress Code: Party Wear - Masks & Colour...lots of Colour!

The Oyster & Seafood Festival Masquerade 'Mardi Gras' style event is a moveable feast where fine fare and fabulous finery come together as a carnival of masked revellers are led by a lively band through the pedestrian streets of Galway.

  • The night starts with an oyster reception and traditional music, before parading to the next stop, a seafood banquet, then on to a third venue, Hotel Meyrick, for dessert & entertainment ‘til the wee hours.

  • Galway’s Oyster Festival has been hailed by the Sunday Times as “one of the 12 greatest shows on earth" and ranks in the AA Travel Guide among Europe’s Seven Best Festivals.

  • As this vibrant city pulls out all the stops for The Gathering, this is the year to taste the celebrated hospitality and vibrant atmosphere that is gloriously Galway.

  • Indulge your creativity and don your most captivating attire before joining us for the Oyster Festival Maquerade 'Mardi Gras' style event through the streets of Galway (colourful clothes & masks encouraged!)

  • Tickets include entry to all 3 venues, 5 bands, prosecco, oysters & canapes reception, wine & Guinness with the main buffet, seafood fork buffet, (Please advise in advance if you do not eat seafood, dessert, tea & coffee.

Tribal Oyster Feast Off

Ticket Price: €20 (Kids under 12 go FREE)

ALL visitors (whether Galway Tribes or not)  can experience the food village which will have the best of Galway's artisan delights and delectable morsels available to purchase. This year we welcome the BEST OF THE WEST Cook Off final as part of the LookWest.ie recipe competition - all entrants must include at least 1 ingredient from a west of Ireland food producer.

  • Enjoy the Circus lessons for kids from 12pm-3pm
  • Dine your way around the Food Village (Artisan, Cava, Kelly Oysters, RAW Sushi, WA Café, West at The Twelve)

  • Enjoy demonstrations from an impressive line-up of award winning chefs Family fun at the Galway Oyster Festival

  • Marvel at the skill on show during the 'Hot Oyster Awards’

  • Play the giant family games from 12-3pm

  • Join in the Pirate Fancy Dress!
  • Welcome the winning sailing crew from the Annual Oyster Festival Race

  • Party with all the fantastic entertainment on offer

ALL are welcome at the last event of the 2013 Galway Oyster Festival. However, this year, as part of The Gathering 2013, we are also giving YOU an opportunity to be part of the longest running oyster festival in the world! Descendants of the 14 Tribes of Galway living all over the world are invited to home to Ireland to celebrate their ancestry at the 59th Galway International Oyster & Seafood Festival.

  • In addition to our Sunday events, we are creating a reunion of Galway families and are inviting  members of the Tribes of Galway to come together and maybe find a long lost relative or two!

  • To enter is simple: if you are linked in name OR to a descendant of Athy, Blake, Bodkin, Browne, D'Arcy, Deane, Ffont, Ffrench, Joyce, Kirwan, Lynch, Martin, Morris or Skerritt - you are eligible to enter the new competition (spelling variations Tribes of Galway, The Gathering at Galway Oyster Festivalaccepted).   • In addition to the Feast Off, visitors to the 59th Galway International Oyster & Seafood Festival will have a chance to take part in the festival community parade as one of the famous families of Galway, enjoy a Tribes of Galway walking tour or attend one of a number of talks about the history of the Tribes of Galway and their influence on both the city and the world at large.
